Hello (Fixed Gear) London!

with one comment

It’s been exactly two years since I learnt to ride a bike outside the confines of a spinning class studio. That’s right – I’m ashamed to admit that I spent the first 21 years of my life completely oblivious to the soaking wet trousers and calloused hands that riding [in London] brings. Learning to ride a bike was intended to be just another futile New Year’s Resolution, but this one stuck, and it’s become an (un)healthy obsession.

When it came to choosing my first steed, I was only interested in the colour. But I soon realised I should buck up my attitudes towards buying a bike, because even though this was my first time, I was a couple of decades late – no plastic tricycles for me. So a friend introduced me to my bright pink (of course) Fuji Feather Track bike. Besides a few dodgy moments (90% of my Uni commute was along Euston Road), by mid-Jan I was totally getting into it.

Before I realised foot retention was a good idea…

By getting into it, I mean I was and still am completely hooked. There has been a direct correlation between catching this fixed gear bug and the decline of my girlie wardrobe; skirts have gone for good if I’m going to get from A to B for free. Even the colour pink seemed too unsettling for me so I began my first build, starting with a silver Vivalo frame. Thanks to my OCD, one Dura Ace seat post meant that all the other components had to follow suit. I was hungry for a month, but it was worth it… Still easily wowed by carbon, I put a Notorious 90 on the front. Although this isn’t what any NJS frame-makers had in mind for their classic creations, it did provoke me to take off the front brake sooner than I thought – it just looked weird on such a deep rim.

Although it’s a bit late in the season I am now saying goodbye to headwind troubles by swapping the 90mm carbon for an H+Son wheel to match the rear, returning the Viv to its more familiar form. But, I can’t quite let go fully of the Hip Hop Slavery so I am half way through my next build – a recently ‘Armourtexed’ frame in HHS sparkly red…

Sparklez

I didn’t know many riders when I first started out, so when Fixedgearlondon got in touch I was really keen to get to know the other FGL guys, (who are all awesome), to ride with them when I’m not at work and to meet others at FGL events such as the check-point races and sprints. I’m still keen to get more girls riding fixed – maybe that should be my New Year’s resolution for 2014? Now I know I can stick to them…

Dickies Fixed Gear…

Dickies Fixed Gear
Spring / Summer 2014 – 873 Work Pant
Designed by Andy Ellis

The fixed gear bicycle has been around since the beginning of cycling history. The need for getting more from a bicycle pushed the fixed gear into the shadows of a vast cycling industry. For over 100 years the fixed gear was pretty much forgotten about… until messengers started using fixed gear bikes, triggering It’s resurgence. In the last few years the fixed gear culture has given cycling a huge awakening.

A fixed gear bike is the purest and most perfect form of bicycle. Fixed gear has introduced a new younger audience to cycling, many of these new riders would not have ever gotten on 2 wheels if the fixed gear bike had not emerged from the shadows…

“As a skateboarder I have ridden in Dickies and now as a fixed gear rider I use Dickies everyday. The classic style and hard wearing fabrics make them perfect for standing up against the abuse of constant movement. Fixedgearlondon.com has been supported by Dickies over the last few years and we have worked on many successful projects together. The Dickies Fixed Gear collection is the natural evolution of our working relationship. DFG is Designed by a fixed gear lifer for fixed gear riders.”

Dickies make clothing that has stood the test of time and we do not need to rehash anything – The DFG collection is subtle in its branding and could be missed by the non-discerning eye. All of the features in the collection are completely useful, they reflect the perfect balance between form and function that is inherent in a fixed gear bike.

“If you take anything away it ceases to function and if you add anything to a fixed gear bike it becomes superfluous”
